Ribbion Mixer
The working principle of a ribbon mixer, or ribbon blender, is based on a highly efficient, countercurrent flow of material that results in a rapid and homogeneous blend of dry powders, granules,
and light pastes. The core component is a double helical ribbon agitator mounted on a central shaft
inside a U-shaped trough. This agitator’s unique design features two sets of ribbons: a larger outer
ribbon and a smaller inner ribbon, each helically wound to move material in opposing axial
directions when the shaft rotates
When the mixer is started, the motor drives the central shaft and the attached double ribbon agitator.
The outer ribbon, which is pitched to move material from the ends of the U-trough towards the
center, starts a convective flow. Simultaneously, the inner ribbon, with its opposing pitch, pushes
material from the center of the trough back out towards the ends. This combined, dual-directional
movement forces particles to constantly intermix, tumble, and fold over one another.
This counter-current action generates both radial and axial movement, which are the primary
mechanisms for achieving a uniform mixture. The material is not only shuffled back and forth along
the length of the trough (axial flow) but is also lifted from the bottom and dropped back down
(radial flow). Furthermore, the close clearance between the rotating ribbons and the stationary
trough wall creates a mild shearing action, which helps to break up small lumps or aggregates,
further accelerating the homogenization of the solid particles.
