V-Blender
The V-Blender, also known as a V-Cone Blender or Twin Shell Blender, is a widely used machine
for homogeneously mixing dry powders and granules, particularly in the pharmaceutical, food, and
chemical industries. Its core design features two cylindrical shells joined at an angle, typically
between 70 and 90 , to form a distinct “V” shape. This vessel is mounted on trunnions and ∘ ∘
connected to a motor and drive system, which facilitates its rotation around a horizontal axis. The
gentle yet thorough mixing action is ideal for fragile materials as it minimizes particle attrition and
prevents excessive material degradation.
The working principle of the V-Blender is based primarily on diffusion blending and tumble
mixing, driven by gravity. Once the materials are loaded into the V-shaped vessel—typically filling
about 50% to 70% of its total volume for optimal efficiency—the motor begins to rotate the shell.
As the vessel tumbles, the material inside is continuously lifted, split at the apex of the ‘V’, and then
recombined as it cascades down into the two arms. This repetitive dividing and merging of the batch
causes the individual particles to move in a random, intermingling pattern.
This unique, multi-directional movement ensures a high degree of homogeneity. The continuous
convergence and divergence of the material create an excellent environment for particle-to-particle
interaction, allowing even trace components to be uniformly distributed throughout the bulk. The
long, straight sides of the cylindrical shells aid in this process, guiding the material as it freely falls
and spreads out. The entire process is relatively fast, often achieving a homogeneous blend within a
cycle time of 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the material properties and batch size.

A V-Blender is used for homogeneous mixing of dry powders and granules in pharmaceutical, food, and chemical applications.
The V-shape repeatedly splits and recombines material, ensuring uniform particle distribution and efficient blending.
Yes, its gentle tumbling and diffusion mixing prevent particle damage and material degradation.
For best results, the blender is typically filled between 50% and 70% of its total volume.
Depending on material and batch size, most blends are achieved within 5 to 15 minutes.
